Why are FedLearn’s Z1/MRKI scores used in lieu of a formal certification exam?

A traditional certification exam only captures how an individual performed on one day, in one sitting and for a couple of hours. It’s a snapshot, and this snapshot can be misleading (e.g., a candidate crams for the exam, gets lucky on question selection or passes the exam and forgets the material a week later). 

FedLearn’s approach is different. Because every course runs on our proprietary Z1 behavioral analytics engine, the AI measures a learner continuously—rather than at a single end point. Z1 observes:

  • How a learner engages with the material throughout an entire course
  • Where understanding builds and stalls
  • How a learner works through practice and assessment

Instead of one data point, our certifications are informed by thousands of data points—gathered across the entire learning experience. This continuous view is what makes Z1 measurement a more accurate predictor that a learner has genuinely grasped the content. Years of research support this: how learners interact with material across a course has been validated as a strong predictor of whether they are learning and retaining it and being able to apply new knowledge and skills on the job. A point-in-time exam simply cannot see any of that—it arrives only at the end, and after the learning that mattered already happened.

This is why MRKI is central to how FedLearn certifies. MRKI combines Z1 continuous engagement data with assessment performance into a single readiness measure. Therefore, FedLearn certifications are awarded on a stronger basis than traditional exam-only credentials as they reflect demonstrated knowledge and a validated, full-course readiness signal. Conventional certifications only ask, “Did they pass the test?” FedLearn certifications ask the question that actually matters to a mission, “Is this person ready to perform?”
