About This AI Online Course
Artificial intelligence is transforming how nations compete, make decisions and conduct operations across the defense landscape.
No longer a future capability, AI is a present-day strategic enabler—driving faster decision making, enhancing mission effectiveness and shaping the balance of global power.
This online course provides a foundational understanding of how AI is being operationalized within the U.S. Department of War and across the broader defense ecosystem. You will learn how advances in computing, data and communications have brought AI to the forefront of military capability, enabling applications ranging from decision-support systems and sensor networks to autonomous and semi-autonomous platforms.
Building on decades of defense-driven innovation, the course examines how AI is integrated into traditional military systems, such as command and control, weapons systems and intelligence operations, while also introducing emerging concepts like learning machines, reasoning systems and human-machine teaming. Emphasis is placed on how AI supports—rather than replaces—human decision-makers in time-critical and high-stakes environments.
You will review the strategic implications of AI in great power competition, including global investment trends, the role of policy and governance and the importance of maintaining a technological advantage. The course highlights the critical role of collaboration among government, industry and academia in advancing AI innovation and adoption.
In addition, the course addresses key challenges associated with AI in defense. By understanding both the opportunities and limitations of AI, you will be better prepared to engage with AI-enabled systems and contribute to mission success.
